Summary

Warner Bros.’ principal European studio in Hertfordshire, with 18 soundstages, a 79-acre backlot, Europe’s largest stage-based water tank, and home to every Harry Potter film across a decade of production.

About this location

Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden occupies a former Second World War aircraft manufacturing site in Leavesden, Hertfordshire, roughly 20 miles north of London. The site was converted into a temporary studio by the James Bond production GoldenEye in 1994, which leased the vacant aircraft hangars and transformed them into stages. The site’s scale quickly attracted major productions: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and Sleepy Hollow followed GoldenEye. From 2000, all eight Harry Potter films based their operations here, with Privet Drive built as a standing exterior set on the backlot.

Warner Bros. purchased the site in 2010 following the completion of the final Potter film. After a £110m refurbishment — including proper soundproofing that the original wartime structures lacked, and the addition of new stages — the studio reopened in 2013. Total stage space now reaches approximately 50,000 square metres, with a 79-acre backlot offering a 180-degree clear horizon useful for exterior set construction. The water tank is among the largest stage-based tanks in Europe. Aquaman 2, Barbie, and Wicked are among recent productions.

Adjacent to the active studio, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London occupies dedicated space and receives over 6,000 visitors per day at peak times. The active studio operates entirely separately with secure perimeter access.
