Royal Docks London
London · E16
Summary
Three interconnected docks — the largest enclosed docks in the world when built — with wide water surfaces, industrial quays, and the ExCeL centre infrastructure serving production.
About this location
The Royal Docks consist of Royal Victoria, Royal Albert, and King George V docks, forming the largest enclosed dockland in the world when constructed in the Victorian era. The docks — still water-filled and surrounded by quays — cover approximately 100 hectares of open water. The surrounding built environment is a mix of remaining Victorian dock infrastructure (dock walls, original gatehouse structures, remnant warehouse buildings) and post-regeneration development (ExCeL exhibition centre, residential blocks, the London City Airport runway which uses King George V dock as a lateral reference).
The docks are managed by the Greater London Authority through the Royal Docks Team. The Newham is significantly underused in production relative to Canary Wharf and the south bank, which means location fees and scheduling flexibility are better. The wide dock basins give genuinely open water views in the middle of London — something the narrower Thames upstream cannot match. Crane access to quays, loading facilities through ExCeL, and substantial parking support production infrastructure.
The GLA Royal Docks Team handles filming enquiries alongside London Borough of Newham. The Pontoon Dock area to the south of Royal Albert Dock has a quieter post-industrial character; the Emirates Air Line cable car crosses the Thames immediately east and provides an infrastructure backdrop. The Elizabeth line at Custom House station gives excellent crew transport.
