About this location

Syon House stands in the London Borough of Hounslow in west London on the north bank of the River Thames, facing Richmond. The name derives from Syon Abbey, a Bridgettine nunnery founded by Henry V in 1415 at a nearby site and moved to the present location in 1431. It was one of the wealthiest nunneries in England. In 1539 the abbey was dissolved; the 1st Duke of Somerset had the site rebuilt as Syon House in the Italian Renaissance style, using it until his execution in 1552. Catherine Howard, Henry VIII’s fifth wife, was imprisoned at Syon in 1541 to 1542 before her execution; Henry VIII’s own coffin rested at Syon overnight on its procession to Windsor. Lady Jane Grey received formal notification at Syon on 9 July 1553 that she was Edward VI’s designated heir.

In 1594 the house was acquired by Henry Percy, 9th Earl of Northumberland, and has remained in the Percy (later Percy/Northumberland) family since. The 1st Duke of Northumberland commissioned Robert Adam to redesign the interior in 1762; Adam’s “Adam style” is considered to have begun at Syon. Adam completed five state rooms on the west, south and east sides: the Great Hall (with black and white marble floor and Roman statues); the Ante-Room (with gilded Ionic columns and a coloured scagliola floor); the Dining Room (with Corinthian columns and Bacchanalian friezes); the Red Drawing Room (with crimson Spitalfields silk hangings and a ceiling of 250 paintings on paper); and the Long Gallery, 136 feet long. Capability Brown landscaped the 200-acre park in the 1760s. The Great Conservatory, designed by Charles Fowler in the 1820s, is among the earliest large-scale metal and glass structures in England.

The house is the west London residence of Ralph Percy, 12th Duke of Northumberland.

Film and television productions at Syon House include: Emma (BBC/A&E, 1996 TV film, directed by Diarmuid Lawrence, starring Kate Beckinsale as Emma Woodhouse); King Ralph (Universal, 1991, directed by David S. Ward, starring John Goodman); Gosford Park (Film Four/USA Films, 2001, directed by Robert Altman, starring Kristin Scott Thomas, Maggie Smith, Helen Mirren and an ensemble cast — the house provided interior sequences); The Avengers (Warner Bros., 1998, directed by Jeremiah Chechik, starring Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman); Killing Eve (BBC America/BBC Three, 2018 onwards, written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, starring Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer — Syon’s state rooms were used for interior scenes); Belgravia (ITV/Carnival, 2020, written by Julian Fellowes, which used the house as a filming location); Bridgerton (Netflix/Shondaland, 2020 onwards, which used both the house and ).
