Summary
A working commercial port on the Isle of Sheppey at the Thames estuary mouth — the former Royal Naval dockyard converted to a commercial vehicle import terminal, with surviving Georgian Boat Store and dockyard infrastructure.
About this location
Sheerness was a Royal Naval dockyard from the 17th century until its transfer to commercial port operation in 1960. The current Port of Sheerness is a major vehicle import terminal (cars arrive by ship and leave by rail and road from this point) operating on the historic dockyard site. The most significant surviving structure is the Boat Store (1858) — a four-storey iron-framed building widely cited as the first large iron-framed structure in the world and a direct predecessor of steel-frame construction.
The site is an active commercial port — vehicle handling infrastructure, roll-on/roll-off berths, and cargo storage alongside the historic dockyard structures. The approach road from Sheerness town across the dockyard approach gives a flat estuary landscape with industrial port infrastructure and the Thames estuary horizon.
For productions, Sheerness gives a working commercial port environment — vehicle import, container handling, estuary — with the specific quality of the Thames mouth light and the flat Sheppey landscape. The Boat Store is a Listed building managed separately. Swale Borough Council and Peel Ports (the port operator) handle access and permits.
