About this location
Pinewood Studios opened in 1936 on the site of a Victorian country house in Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire, roughly 20 miles west of central London. It grew from a single converted mansion into the UK’s dominant film studio complex, with 22 stages ranging from small insert stages to the 007 Stage — at 374 feet long and 160 feet wide, one of the largest production stages in the world. The studio estate covers approximately 100 acres.
Pinewood is synonymous with the James Bond franchise, which has shot there since Dr. No (1962). The 007 Stage was built specifically for The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) and subsequently used for Aliens (1986), Batman (1989), Mamma Mia! (2008), and dozens of other productions. The lot also features a dedicated underwater filming tank — the largest in Europe — used for aquatic sequences. The backlot contains exterior sets that double for streets, industrial areas, and rural England depending on construction.
Beyond Bond, productions based at Pinewood include the original Star Wars trilogy, Indiana Jones, The Dark Knight, and Paddington. The studio offers a full service infrastructure: grip, electrical, construction, and post-production facilities on site. Short-term stage hires are available but the complex tends towards longer-term production leases.
