About this location

Loseley Park stands three miles south-west of Guildford in Surrey, in the hamlet of Artington near Littleton. The More family acquired the estate at the beginning of the 16th century, and the present house was built between 1562 and 1568 for Sir William More, who was persuaded by Elizabeth I to replace his existing house with something larger and more worthy of a royal visit. Sir William used stone from the ruins of Waverley Abbey, a dissolved Cistercian monastery nearby, as his principal building material. The resulting house is a Grade I listed Tudor mansion of warm golden stone, with mullioned windows, a great hall, and a long gallery.

The great hall retains its original minstrel’s gallery and panelling brought from Henry VIII’s Nonsuch Palace. The drawing room has a gilded ceiling commissioned for James I’s visit and a massive chalk fireplace attributed to Hans Holbein. Among the house’s collections are one of the few surviving portraits of Anne Boleyn. The walled garden was redesigned in the 1990s using a layout inspired by Gertrude Jekyll, with separate “rooms” for rose, herb, flower, and vegetable gardens, enclosed by old stone walls and containing a vine walk and wisteria pergola.

The house has been used for film and television production since the 1950s, including The Counterfeit Plan (1957), A Dandy in Aspic (1968, starring Laurence Harvey), and The Legacy (1978). More recent productions include Midsomer Murders (ITV, 1997 onwards), Sense and Sensibility (BBC, 2008, directed by John Alexander, starring Hattie Morahan as Elinor Dashwood and Charity Wakefield as Marianne), Emma (BBC, 2009, directed by Jim O’Hanlon, starring Romola Garai as Emma Woodhouse), The Crown (Netflix, 2016, used for royal location sequences), The Favourite (2018, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, starring Olivia Colman as Queen Anne), Rebecca (2020, directed by Ben Wheatley, starring Lily James and Armie Hammer), Belgravia (ITV, 2020, adapted from Julian Fellowes’s novel), and The Special Relationship (2010, directed by Richard Loncraine, starring Michael Sheen and Dennis Quaid).
