Summary

A Grade II* listed Elizabethan prodigy house in Kent, with Tudor wings from 1584 and a classical central block remodelled in the 1660s, now housing Cobham Hall School, used as a filming location for Agent Cody Banks 2: Destination London (2004), Wild Child (2008), Bleak House (BBC, 2005), Hetty Feather (CBBC), and A Ghost Story for Christmas: The Room in the Tower (BBC, 2025).

About this location

Cobham Hall stands in its own at Cobham in Kent, approximately midway between Gravesend and Rochester. The house has medieval origins — a manor existed on the site from the 12th century — but the present building consists principally of two Tudor wings constructed from 1584 for William Brooke, 10th Baron Cobham, and a classical central block rebuilt in 1661 to 1663 for Charles Stewart, 3rd Duke of Richmond and 6th Duke of Lennox, by the London architect Peter Mills. This combination of an Elizabethan prodigy house plan with a later Restoration classical centre produces an unusual and striking composition.

In the 18th century the house passed to the Bligh family, later Earls of Darnley. Sir William Chambers extended the attic storey and made alterations around 1767 to 1770 for the 3rd Earl of Darnley, and the architect-decorator George Shakespear carried out extensive interior work from 1770 to 1781. The most notable interior is the two-storey Gilt Hall with its elaborate carved decoration. James Wyatt designed additional interiors in the early 19th century, including a picture gallery and dining room. Humphry Repton produced a landscape plan in 1790. The library was fitted by George and John Adey Repton in Jacobethan style from 1817 to 1820. The house passed out of family ownership in 1957 and has since housed Cobham Hall School, a private day and boarding school occupying 150 acres of the historic estate. A Gothic dairy designed by Wyatt was restored by the Landmark Trust and opened as holiday accommodation in 2019.

The school’s continued occupation of the house means film use is managed within an active school context. Wild Child (2008, directed by Nick Moore, starring Emma Roberts) used the hall as the Abbey Mount school at the centre of the film’s story. Bleak House (BBC, 2005, adapted from Charles Dickens, starring Gillian Anderson and Charles Dance) filmed exterior sequences here. Agent Cody Banks 2: Destination London (2004, directed by Kevin Allen, starring Frankie Muniz and Keith Allen) used the Gilt Hall for a fight sequence. Hetty Feather (CBBC, adapted from Jacqueline Wilson’s novel) used the hall as the Foundling Hospital. A Ghost Story for Christmas: The Room in the Tower (BBC, 2025) used Cobham Hall as the haunted house at the centre of the story.
