Summary

An 11-mile preserved steam railway in the Sussex Weald — the first standard-gauge preserved passenger railway in Britain, with one of the largest collections of pre-Grouping steam locomotives in operational condition.

About this location

The Bluebell Railway runs 11 miles through the High Weald in East Sussex from Sheffield Park to East Grinstead, passing through Horsted Keynes and Kingscote. Opened as a branch line in 1882 and preserved from 1960 — the first standard-gauge preserved passenger railway in Britain — the line carries a collection of around 30 steam locomotives from the pre-Grouping period (LBSCR, SECR, SR) plus coaching stock.

Sheffield Park station is the principal base — a two-platform Victorian station with a run-round loop, water cranes, and an operational steam depot. Horsted Keynes is a five-platform station significantly larger than the line’s current operational requirements, giving substantial platform area for production use. The surrounding landscape is Wealden England: ancient woodland, farmland, and the specific quality of the High Weald in each season.

The Bluebell Railway has an active film department and has supplied locations and traction to dozens of major productions. The collection gives Victorian and Edwardian steam traction plus coaches from 1870-1960. Night filming by arrangement. The railway is approximately 45 minutes from London Bridge by road.
