Summary

A 14-kilometre urban canal from Paddington to Limehouse — towpath scenes range from Little Venice houseboats to Hackney industrial wharves, all within London.

About this location

The Regent’s Canal runs 14 kilometres from Little Venice in Paddington east through Camden, Islington, Hackney, and Stepney to the Limehouse Basin and the Thames. The character of the canal changes substantially along its length: the western section through Little Venice and Primrose Hill passes through affluent residential areas with moored narrowboats and elegant bridge arches; the Camden section passes the lock flight at Camden Town with its market character; east of Angel the canal enters a more industrial character through De Beauvoir Town and Haggerston; by Hackney Wick and Bow the surroundings are post-industrial warehouse conversion territory.

The canal has appeared in British film and television productions too numerous to list completely. It represents perhaps the most photographed urban waterway in Britain. Specific sections have specific associations: Little Venice is the BBC Radio 4 territory of upmarket narrowboat life; Camden lock appears in virtually every Camden-set film or TV production; the Hackney section appears in East End dramas. The towpath is continuous and navigable on foot, making it possible to frame a wide range of visual registers within a short travel distance.

Canal and River Trust manages all filming on the towpath and waterway. Their commercial filming permit is required and administered through their national team. Individual locations within the canal corridor — moored boats, lock-keeper cottages, footbridges — may have separate arrangements. The towpath is narrow (1.5 to 2 metres) in most sections; heavy equipment moves are planned around cyclists and pedestrians.
