Summary

An almost perfectly preserved early-18th-century terrace in Westminster — used repeatedly by productions as a stand-in for period government London.

About this location

Queen Anne’s Gate is a short residential street in Westminster, running parallel to St James’s Park. The majority of the street’s buildings date from 1704 and form one of the most complete surviving early 18th-century residential terraces in central London. The houses are of brown brick with ornate carved door hoods of a distinctive shell pattern, pilastered doorcases, and original ironwork on most of the properties. The street terminates at Birdcage Walk to the south with the park visible through the gap.

The consistency of the architecture — minimal modern insertions, no shopfronts, and a domestic scale — makes the street genuinely useful as a period double for anything requiring a Georgian government or upper-class residential exterior in London. It has been used by BBC and ITV drama productions, film features, and documentaries. The street is quiet and residential, which reduces ambient noise for location recording.

Westminster City Council filming permits are required. Given the residential nature of the street, early-morning and evening shooting is generally avoided out of courtesy to residents. No parking on the street itself; unit base goes in Petty France or nearby car parks. The street is short — roughly 150 metres — which concentrates all options into a tight geography. The junction with Birdcage Walk offers a park backdrop when shooting south.
