Summary

A 1901 Frank Matcham music hall in east London — a full 1200-seat auditorium with original terracotta facade, gilded plasterwork, stage, and the characteristic Matcham horseshoe configuration of stalls, dress circle, and upper circle.

About this location

The Hackney Empire on Mare Street was designed by Frank Matcham and opened in 1901 as a variety theatre. It is one of a small number of surviving Matcham music halls in London — the architect responsible for most of the major Victorian and Edwardian theatres in Britain. The building retains its original terracotta facade with Matcham’s typical use of Turkish-influenced ornament, and the auditorium has its original gilded plasterwork, horseshoe plan, and stage house in functional condition.

The main auditorium seats around 1,200 across stalls, dress circle, and upper circle. The stage is 36 feet wide; the stage house is full-height with grid and flying capacity. The venue operates as a producing theatre with a programme of comedy, music, and variety in the tradition of the original music hall. Available for hire when not in programming use.

For productions, the Empire gives a complete Victorian variety theatre interior — a specific type that has almost entirely disappeared from London. The auditorium reads as any period from 1901 to the 1970s depending on dressing. The stage and auditorium relationship is the correct one for a variety hall rather than a proscenium drama theatre. Film hire enquiries go through the venue management.
