Summary

A medieval outcast burial ground in Southwark — iron gates draped in ribbons and tokens, a walled outdoor space with a raw documentary quality few locations can match.

About this location

Crossbones Graveyard is located on Redcross Way in Southwark, a short walk from Borough Market and the Jubilee line’s Southwark station. The site operated as a burial ground for the poor of the Winchester Liberty from at least the medieval period, initially for prostitutes working in the legal brothels of Bankside. Archaeologists excavated part of the site in the 1990s when the Jubilee line extension was constructed, recovering skeletal remains from some 148 individuals. The ground is now owned by Transport for London.

What remains visible is a gated outdoor space — a sunken garden-scale area enclosed by brick walls, with the entrance gate covered in ribbons, flowers, and votive objects left by visitors. A community-managed garden with shrubs and memorial markers fills the interior. The atmosphere is quiet, enclosed, and unlike anything else in Southwark.

The site has been used in documentary, music video, and drama productions requiring an unusual outdoor London backdrop with historical weight and without any tourist infrastructure visible. TfL manages the site for community use; film enquiries go through their land management team. The narrow Redcross Way gives an interesting period-feeling alley outside. Scale is tight — maximum practical crew for interior is around ten people with handheld or compact camera setups.
