Summary

A walled castle complex at the centre of Cardiff combining Roman foundations, a Norman motte, and Victorian Gothic Revival apartments with lavishly decorated interiors, managed by Cardiff Council for events and filming.

About this location

Cardiff Castle occupies a prominent site in the city centre, enclosed by Roman walls that are still largely intact. The site layers nearly two thousand years of construction: Roman fort, Norman keep on its motte, and the nineteenth-century Gothic Revival mansion wing added by the Marquesses of Bute and designed by William Burges. The Burges interiors are among the most ornate Victorian rooms in Britain — gilded ceilings, carved stonework, medieval-inspired tapestries, and painted walls in the library, banqueting hall, and Arab Room. For exterior work, the castle clock tower and wall section along Castle Street provide a period Cardiff streetscape backdrop. The grounds and the animal wall adjacent to Bute Park add flexibility. Cardiff Council manages the castle and can accommodate filming bookings; the site is substantial enough for large-scale period productions. Welsh productions from Doctor Who to feature films have used both the exterior and interior spaces. Permit terms and hire rates are bespoke and negotiated through the council’s events team.
