Summary

A Victorian residential and commercial suburb of Cardiff — terraced housing, a Victorian shopping street (Cowbridge Road East), independent cafes, and the neighbourhood-scale character of inner Cardiff.

About this location

Canton is a suburb immediately west of Cardiff city centre, developed in the Victorian period as the city expanded rapidly with the coal trade. The character is working and lower-middle-class Victorian residential: two-storey terraced streets in Welsh grey brick, small front gardens, bay-windowed parlour fronts. The main commercial street — Cowbridge Road East — is a Victorian and Edwardian shopping street with independent businesses at ground level.

The suburb has attracted a concentration of arts and media workers and has the independent cafe and restaurant density that goes with that. BBC Wales, S4C, and independent production companies operate from Cardiff, and Canton is established as a working neighbourhood for the Welsh production community.

For productions, Canton gives a credible inner-Cardiff neighbourhood environment — not the Bay regeneration architecture, not the Victorian civic centre, but the ordinary Welsh residential street that is used in serial drama and social-realist production. Cardiff Council handles street filming permits; the Welsh Government’s Creative Wales office has additional production support resources.
