Summary

A 1911 cinema on Brixton’s Windrush Square — the oldest continually operating cinema in London south of the river, with a working Art Deco auditorium.

About this location

The Ritzy Picturehouse in Brixton is a cinema that has operated continuously since 1911, making it one of the oldest working cinemas in Britain. The current building fabric dates mostly from the 1920s and 1930s, with a principal auditorium in an Art Deco style and five additional screens added in later decades. The main auditorium retains its period character: curved balcony, original rake, and the atmospheric qualities of a 1930s picture palace that has been updated but not gutted.

The Ritzy stands on Windrush Square at the northern end of Brixton Market, with the market itself visible through the windows of the cinema . The combination of the cinema building, the market stalls, and the post-Windrush mural on the adjacent library wall makes the square one of the most symbolically layered locations in South London. The square has been used in documentary and drama productions depicting Brixton’s cultural history.

The Ritzy is run by Picturehouse Cinemas as part of their wider circuit. Film hire is managed through the Picturehouse events team. The main auditorium can be hired out of projection hours for shoots; the and foyer areas are also available. The building is a Grade II listed structure which limits the extent of any temporary production installation. Brixton tube station (Victoria line) is directly adjacent.
