Summary
A Grade I listed unfinished Victorian Gothic mansion in a secluded valley at Woodchester Park near Nympsfield in Gloucestershire, England, designed by Benjamin Bucknall from 1857 as a gothic revival house for William Leigh and left incomplete on Leigh’s death in 1873 with the interior largely unfinished; surrounded by a designed landscape including five lakes attributed in part to plans by Capability Brown; now a heritage property managed by Woodchester Mansion Trust; used as a filming location for Dracula (BBC/ITV, 2006) and The Crown (Netflix, Series 2, 2017).
About this location
Woodchester Mansion stands at the base of a steep, heavily wooded valley in Woodchester Park, approximately five miles south of Stroud in Gloucestershire. The estate occupies a site that had been a hunting lodge and then a Georgian house called Spring Park, standing in laid out in the 1740s and later relandscaped at the end of the 18th century, partly to plans associated with Capability Brown, creating a series of five lakes from earlier fishponds.
William Leigh, a Catholic convert who had purchased the estate, commissioned Benjamin Bucknall, a disciple of the French architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, to design a new mansion in the Gothic Revival style from 1857. Bucknall, who translated Viollet-le-Duc’s major works into English, applied the French theorist’s principles to an English country house, incorporating medieval structural techniques throughout. The surviving structure represents a substantial portion of the intended house — principally the main block — with masonry and carved stone of high quality.
Leigh died in 1873, and the house was never completed. Surviving family members engaged another architect, James Wilson of Bath, but the cost of completion or replacement proved too great. The house was subsequently used variously as a school and in other ways, but the fabric was allowed to deteriorate. It came to public attention as a monument to unfinished Victorian ambition. It is now managed by the Woodchester Mansion Trust and is open to the public on selected dates, with the unfinished interior — complete with scaffolding, mason’s workshops, and carved but unplaced stonework — giving it an unusual character as a building frozen mid-construction.
The incomplete interiors and Gothic stone vaulting make Woodchester well-suited to atmospheric period and fantasy filming. Dracula (ITV/BBC, 2006, directed by Bill Eagles, written by Stewart Harcourt, starring Marc Warren as Dracula and David Suchet as Van Helsing) used the mansion as a primary interior location. The Crown (Netflix, 2016 onwards, produced by Left Bank Pictures, Series 2, 2017) used Woodchester Mansion as a filming location.
