Summary
The capital of the Fens — a Georgian river port town with the finest Georgian townscape in Cambridgeshire, the River Nene running through the centre, and the Peckover House (National Trust) on the main quayside.
About this location
Wisbech is the main town of Cambridgeshire’s Fenland district, situated on the River Nene 12 miles from the Wash. The town’s wealth in the 18th and early 19th centuries — from agricultural produce, river trade, and banking — produced a concentration of Georgian townhouses along the North and South Brinks (the quayside streets on either side of the Nene). North Brink is routinely cited as the finest Georgian streetscape in Cambridgeshire, with a continuous line of Georgian brick townhouses facing the river.
Peckover House (National Trust, 1722) is on North Brink — a large Georgian merchant’s house with a Victorian garden. The market place and town centre give a working Fenland market town character. The Nene through the town carries commercial river traffic to the Wash.
For productions, Wisbech gives a Fenland Georgian river town environment — the North Brink as a specific period streetscape — in a setting with the specific qualities of flat Fenland light and the working river. Fenland District Council handles filming permits.
