Summary

London’s last surviving galleried coaching inn — a 17th-century timber-framed inn off Borough High Street with open galleries, a cobbled yard, and a range maintained in period condition.

About this location

The George Inn off Borough High Street in Southwark is the last remaining galleried coaching inn in London, owned by the National Trust and run as a working public house. The current building dates from 1677 (rebuilt after a fire), replacing an earlier inn on the same site. The inn consists of a south-facing range of two storeys with open timber galleries at first-floor level, enclosing a cobbled courtyard that was formerly the coaching yard. The ground floor runs along the south side of the yard; the upper galleries give access to the former guest rooms above.

Charles Dickens is documented as having frequented the George and it appears in Little Dorrit. The yard and galleries have appeared in multiple period drama productions as a credible 17th-18th century inn exterior. The building is Grade I listed.

The National Trust manages the building; the pub operation is a separate licence. Film hire of the yard and exteriors goes through the National Trust’s commercial hire team. The pub itself (the working range) can be approached directly for interior hire. The yard is usable as a contained period location — the modern Southwark street is not visible from within the yard.
