Summary

A Norman motte-and-bailey castle with a shell keep in the centre of Tamworth — a compact castle complex with a Great Hall, a Tudor withdrawal room, and a Victorian county museum, overlooking the confluence of the Tame and Anker rivers.

About this location

Tamworth Castle occupies a natural motte above the confluence of the River Tame and River Anker at the centre of Tamworth. The motte was first fortified in the 10th century; the current stone buildings date from the Norman period (12th century shell keep) through Tudor (the Jacobean Great Hall and withdrawing room) to Victorian (the museum fitout). The castle has been in continuous use as a public building since at least the 18th century and is now managed by Tamworth Borough Council as a museum.

The castle give access to the motte top (with views over the town), the courtyard, and the castle approach from the Pleasure Grounds below. The Pleasure Grounds — a Victorian public park beside the rivers — extend to the north and east.

For productions, Tamworth gives a compact Norman-to-Jacobean castle in a public setting, with a museum interior that includes period rooms, a medieval hall, and a Victorian display environment. The site is small enough to be manageable for a tight crew. Hire through Tamworth Borough Council.
