Summary

Swansea’s main entertainment street — a Georgian/Victorian street of former commercial premises now pubs and s, with surviving listed facades and a working city-centre nightlife character.

About this location

Wind Street runs from Castle Square to the river in central Swansea and is the city’s principal night-time economy street. The street retains a largely Victorian and Georgian commercial street frontage — former banks, insurance offices, and warehouses converted to licensed premises, with listed facades that preserve the original architectural character at street level.

The street was heavily bombed in 1941 and much of central Swansea was rebuilt, but Wind Street survived in better condition than most of the centre. Several of the Victorian banks have well-preserved banking hall interiors behind commercial pub conversions. The street level character — wide pavement, period facade detail, cast-iron columns — is readable as a period commercial street when the contemporary signage is managed.

For productions, Wind Street gives a Welsh city-centre commercial street environment with surviving period facades. Filming permits go through the City and County of Swansea (Swansea council’s filming contact). The street is busy in the evening; daytime access for a quieter version of the environment is more practical. The wider Swansea city centre includes the 1960s Quadrant shopping centre and the castle ruins as additional set components within 200 metres.
