Summary

A north-east seaside seafront with a working harbour, 1903 arts and crafts pier, lighthouse, and an intact Edwardian promenade streetscape — without the tourist overlay of larger seaside resorts.

About this location

Roker is a coastal district of Sunderland on the north bank of the River Wear at its mouth, about 1.5 miles north of the city centre. The seafront consists of a Victorian/Edwardian promenade backing onto cliff-top land, with Roker Pier — a 1903 dressed-stone construction 760 metres in length — extending into the North Sea. The pier has a lighthouse at the end and a lifeboat house at the shore end.

The harbour behind the pier is a working harbour with fishing boats and small craft. Roker’s street level — Marine Walk, Roker Terrace — is Edwardian residential and commercial in reasonable condition, giving a period seafront street environment without the regeneration overlay that has changed most comparable locations in the north-east.

For productions, Roker gives a specific visual: a working-class north-east seaside town that reads as period, with the Arts and Crafts pier as a distinctive architectural set piece against the North Sea. The beach is open sand accessible at low tide. Permit through Sunderland City Council’s events and filming team. The Sunderland area has been used as a filming location for Channel 4 and BBC drama.
