About this location
Sudbury Hall stands in the village of Sudbury in south Derbyshire. The present house was built between 1660 and 1680 by George Vernon, in the aftermath of the Restoration of Charles II, and is unusual in being designed by its owner without a recorded architect. Vernon kept meticulous accounts of the project, which show no payment to an outside designer. The house is a Restoration mansion built on a Jacobean plan: its deep-red brick exterior, with stone dressings, central cupola, and matching chimneys, presents a markedly different silhouette from its contemporaries. Vernon married Northamptonshire heiress Margaret Onley and used her fortune to fund the ambitious project, also establishing an estate village close to the hall to house servants and labourers.
The interior state rooms on the west side of the building contain some of the finest late 17th-century decorative work in England. The great staircase has carving attributed to Edward Pierce; the Long Gallery has a plasterwork ceiling and carved overmantel; and the saloon contains work by Antonio Verrio and Grinling Gibbons. These are considered exceptional examples of Restoration decorative craftsmanship. Queen Adelaide, widow of William IV, leased the hall for three years from 1840. The east wing was added in 1876 to 1883 by George Devey. The hall and its principal contents were transferred to the National Trust in 1967 in part payment of death duties.
The 19th-century servants’ wing houses the National Trust Museum of Childhood. In 2022, the main house reopened after renovation as “The Children’s Country House at Sudbury,” incorporating interactive elements while retaining access to the historic state rooms.
Pride and Prejudice (BBC/A&E, 1995, directed by Simon Langton, written by Andrew Davies, starring Colin Firth as Mr Darcy and Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennet) used the interior of Sudbury Hall to represent Pemberley — Darcy’s great Derbyshire estate — for the scenes in which Elizabeth visits and tours the house. The exterior of Pemberley was filmed separately at Lyme Park in Cheshire.
