Summary

A Victorian Jacobethan country house near Ludlow in Shropshire, described by Pevsner as “the most grandiloquent Victorian mansion in the county”, used as the principal filming location for Atonement (2007, director Joe Wright, starring Keira Knightley and James McAvoy).

About this location

Stokesay Court stands in the parish of Onibury in south Shropshire, overlooking Ludlow and the Clee Hills. The house was built between 1889 and 1892 for John Derby Allcroft, a Shropshire-based glove manufacturer who had built his family firm Dent, Allcroft and Co. into the largest glove manufacturer in the world. Allcroft’s architect was Thomas Harris, who designed the house in the Jacobethan style — a Victorian synthesis of Jacobean and Elizabethan sources — producing a large, asymmetric building of considerable scale and ambition. Allcroft died only six months after the house was completed. The house was one of England’s first to have integral electric light, installed by Edmundsons in 1891, and its gardens were laid out by the landscape architect Henry Ernest Milner.

The house served as an Auxiliary Military Hospital during the First World War, housing convalescent soldiers, and during the Second World War as a temporary home for the evacuated students of Lancing College and a Western Command Junior Leaders’ School. After the death of the last family member in 1992, the contents of the house were sold by Sotheby’s in a major 1994 sale — described by architectural critic Marcus Binney as “exceptionally complete” — raising £4.5 million. Stokesay Court is now owned by Caroline Magnus, niece of the last occupant, and is operated as a private hire venue and filming location.

Atonement (2007, directed by Joe Wright, screenplay by Christopher Hampton after Ian McEwan’s novel, starring Keira Knightley as Cecilia Tallis, James McAvoy as Robbie Turner, and Saoirse Ronan as Briony Tallis) used Stokesay Court as its principal location throughout its pre-war Tallis family sequences. The house and stand in for “Tallis House” — the large English country house around which the film’s first act is centred. The production chose Stokesay for its preserved period interior, which retained an authentic pre-war atmosphere without requiring significant redressing.
