Summary

The Victorian pottery district of Stoke — Wedgwood’s original Etruria works site, the Trent and Mersey Canal, bottle kilns, and the industrial landscape of the Five Towns as Arnold Bennett described them.

About this location

Etruria is a district of Stoke-on-Trent adjacent to the Trent and Mersey Canal where Josiah Wedgwood established his Etruria Works in 1769 — the pottery factory that made Wedgwood internationally significant. The original factory has been largely demolished, but the area retains the canal, the industrial canal-side infrastructure, and some surviving pottery industry buildings.

The wider Stoke area contains a significant collection of surviving bottle kilns — the distinctive 30-50 metre pottery kilns that once numbered in the thousands across the Potteries and now survive in single figures, scattered through the industrial districts of Burslem, Longton, and Hanley. The Gladstone Pottery Museum in Longton has the largest surviving collection of intact bottle kilns in a single location and offers film hire.

For productions, the Stoke area gives access to a specifically English industrial landscape — the Potteries — that Arnold Bennett documented in the Five Towns novels and which has appeared in period productions requiring an industrial Midlands environment. Stoke-on-Trent City Council handles filming permits for public streets.
