Summary
The surviving section of Southampton’s medieval city walls — towers and curtain wall dating from the 13th century, partly accessible on the wall walk, with the Bargate (12th-century gatehouse) as the principal set piece.
About this location
Southampton’s medieval walls were built from the 13th century onwards following the French raid of 1338. About half the original circuit survives — the west-facing section from the Bargate to the West Quay is substantially intact, with towers (God’s House Tower, the Catchcold Tower, the Arundel Tower) still standing to full or near-full height. The Bargate on High Street is the principal surviving medieval structure — a 12th-century gate tower with a 14th-century extension, once the north gate of the town.
The walls are in a public park setting between the old town and the modern retail centre. The to the west, where the walls originally met the tidal shore, is now the West Quay retail complex; the medieval wall line is traceable along the Pilgrims’ Trail between the towers.
For productions, Southampton’s walls give a substantial surviving medieval defensive circuit in an accessible public space — the towers give roofless medieval interiors, the curtain wall gives a medieval walk-level environment. Southampton City Council handles filming permits.
