South Shields sits at the south bank of the River Tyne where it meets the North Sea. The seafront faces east and north along the coast, with a broad sand beach, the Ocean Beach Pleasure Park (an amusement park with some original Victorian infrastructure), and a Victorian commercial seafront. The Tyne Piers — the north and south lighthouses at the river entrance — are visible from the seafront and accessible by walking the pier.

The town has an established place in the history of northern working-class life — it is the setting for Catherine Cookson’s novels, which generated a series of television productions from the 1980s onwards.
