Summary

One of England’s most complete medieval castles, privately owned with intact Tudor interiors in Skipton.

About this location

Skipton Castle is one of the most complete medieval castles in England, with an unbroken history of occupation from the twelfth century. The castle’s six round towers and the intact Tudor great hall and kitchens have survived in remarkable condition, restored after the Civil War by Lady Anne Clifford in the 1650s. The yew tree planted in the conduit court by Lady Anne still grows in the inner courtyard. The castle is privately owned and open to visitors. Its completeness and the surviving furnished medieval and Tudor interiors make Skipton an exceptional Yorkshire castle filming location, and its position in the Yorkshire Dales market town provides both interior and exterior period settings.

Access for filming is coordinated through the site manager or relevant heritage body. The site offers strong visual potential for both aerial and ground-level camera work, and location scouts have visited the area for period and fantasy productions requiring authentic British heritage architecture. Production teams should contact the managing authority well in advance of intended shoot dates to ensure permit clearance.
