Summary
A medieval town in a Severn meander — timber-framed Tudor buildings on the Bear Steps, a covered market hall, and a concentration of medieval street pattern and period architecture unspoiled by modern development.
About this location
Shrewsbury sits inside a tight loop of the River Severn, which encloses the medieval town on three sides. The town centre retains an exceptional concentration of Tudor timber-framed buildings — Pride Hill, the Market Square, and particularly Bear Steps (a flight of steps flanked by 15th-century timber-framed buildings). The covered market hall on Pride Hill is a Victorian iron-framed structure in daily operation.
The town plan is medieval, with narrow lanes (Shuts — passage-ways between buildings) connecting the main streets. The Severn provides a riverside walk with views back to the town, while the medieval bridges (the English Bridge and the Welsh Bridge) give period crossings at each end of the loop. The castle at the top of the hill is a Victorian conversion to museum use by Thomas Telford.
For productions, Shrewsbury gives one of the better-preserved English medieval and Tudor town interiors — the Bear Steps group in particular is specific enough to be recognisable in period drama. The market and town centre trade six days a week. Shropshire Council handles filming permits.
