Summary
A Victorian oque civic building on Sheffield’s Peace Gardens — Corinthian columns, Portland stone, and a suite of council chambers available for production hire.
About this location
Sheffield Town Hall faces Peace Gardens in the city centre, built between 1897 and 1923 to designs by E.W. Mountford. The principal facade is Baroque classical in Portland stone with a full Corinthian column order and an entrance tower; the main architectural interest for film use is the ceremonial sequence of interior rooms: the Lord Mayor’s parlour, the council chamber with its tiered semicircular seating, and the upper banqueting suite with original plasterwork. The overall character is late-Victorian civic pomp — restrained rather than showy, and consistently period.
Sheffield City Council operates a film-friendly permitting environment; the city has hosted production for decades including episodes of various ITV and BBC drama series. Council buildings are available through the council’s commercial events arm. The adjacent Peace Gardens — a large civic water garden completed in 2001 — provide a contemporary public space contrast immediately in front of the period building, which gives productions the option of both period and modern civic exterior in a single location.
Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield are nearby; the Crucible Theatre (world snooker venue) is on the adjacent block and has its own hire programme. The city’s Supertram runs past the town hall, providing tram infrastructure visible in the background for street sequences.
