Summary

Britain’s largest collection of Grade I listed buildings — cast-iron colonnades and five-storey brick warehouses enclosing an active dock.

About this location

The Albert Dock is an enclosed dock complex on Liverpool’s designed by Jesse Hartley and Philip Hardwick and opened in 1846. The warehouses that surround the water on four sides are five storeys of brick carried on cast-iron Doric columns at the water’s edge — a distinctive combination of industrial weight and classical order that makes the dock immediately recognisable in frame. The site is now a mixed-use visitor destination housing the Tate Liverpool, Merseyside Maritime Museum, and various restaurants and s, with the dock water enclosed and accessible from all four sides.

Liverpool Film Office actively promotes the dock for film use and the dock management company works with productions routinely. The location has doubled as a range of settings in period and contemporary productions — the warehouse facades read convincingly as New York 1940s British port, or contemporary arts district depending on art direction. The warehouses also have leasable interior units ranging from e brick warehouse space to fitted commercial interiors.

Productions using the dock get the additional asset of Liverpool beyond the dock entrance: the Liver Building, Port of Liverpool Building, and Cunard Building are all within half a kilometre. Liverpool Film Office handles initial enquiries and can facilitate access negotiations. Parking and unit base area available in the dock car park. Power available from the commercial infrastructure. Quieter than the comparable London docklands locations.
