About this location

Rockingham Castle stands on a prominent ridge above the Welland Valley approximately two miles north of Corby in Northamptonshire. The site had been occupied in the Iron Age and the Roman period before William the Conqueror ordered the construction of a wooden motte-and-bailey castle shortly after the Norman Conquest. Within three decades, William II replaced the timber fortifications with a stone castle, adding a stone shell keep on the large motte and enclosing the outer bailey within a curtain wall. The castle served as a royal retreat for Norman and Plantagenet kings, with the surrounding Rockingham Forest particularly valued for hunting wild boar and deer.

In 1095 a significant church-state council was held at the castle, attended by William II and Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury, to address the issue of episcopal appointments; it failed to reach resolution. The castle remained in regular royal use through the medieval period. Henry VIII granted the castle to Edward Watson in 1544, and the Watson family — later Saunders Watson — has held it since, managing the transition from royal fortress to family residence.

The castle has a strong double-towered gatehouse on the east side with two large semicircular D-towers flanking the gate entrance. The residential buildings within the walls developed substantially in the Tudor and Elizabethan periods. Charles Dickens visited Rockingham Castle and used it as the model for Chesney Wold in Bleak House, staying as the guest of the Watson family; the association is commemorated in the castle.

Productions filmed at Rockingham Castle include: By the Sword Divided (BBC One, 1983 to 1985, written by John Hawkesworth, a period drama about an English Civil War Royalist family — “Arnescote Castle” in the series is Rockingham, and it served as the principal setting across both series with the Lacey family as its fictional inhabitants); Top Secret! (Paramount, 1984, directed by Jim Abrahams, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker, starring Val Kilmer — the castle provided period architectural backdrops for the comedy film).
