About this location

Ragley Hall stands in the parish of Arrow, two miles south of Alcester in Warwickshire, eight miles west of Stratford-upon-Avon. It is the seat of the Seymour-Conway family, Marquesses of Hertford, who have held the estate since the 17th century. The original house was built for Edward Conway, 1st Earl of Conway (1623 to 1683), to the designs of William Hurlbert, with modifications by Robert Hooke, and was completed after Conway’s death in 1683. The house is one of the largest early-Baroque mansions in England, built of honey-coloured sandstone in a severe rectangular block form.

Subsequent owners commissioned major remodelling of the interior on at least three occasions: by James Gibbs around 1750 to 1756 — producing the great hall with its elaborate plasterwork ceiling, widely regarded as Gibbs’s finest interior — and by James Wyatt around 1778 to 1783. A further phase of remodelling was carried out by William Tasker around 1871 to 1873. Anne Conway, philosopher and correspondent of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, lived at Ragley and received notable visitors there including Henry More and Elizabeth of Bohemia in the 17th century. The associated Hertford House in London, built by the Seymour-Conway family as a townhouse, now houses the Wallace Collection.

The hall was opened to the public in 1956 to 1958 by the 8th Marquess, making it one of the first stately homes to welcome visitors after the Second World War. During both world wars the hall served as a military hospital. In the early 20th century the estate’s trustees had recommended demolition.

The Scarlet Pimpernel (ITV/CBS, 1982, starring Anthony Andrews as Percy Blakeney and Jane Seymour as Marguerite) used Ragley Hall for exterior sequences. Doctor Who (BBC One, 2006, Series 2 Episode 4, “The Girl in the Fireplace”, written by Steven Moffat, directed by Euros Lyn, starring David Tennant as the Doctor) filmed the exterior scenes at Ragley. The Crown (Netflix, 2020, Season 4, Episodes 1 and 4) used Ragley Hall for royal location sequences. Dancing on the Edge (BBC Two, 2013, written by Stephen Poliakoff, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor) used Ragley Hall as the home of Lady Cremorne.
