Summary
The southern terminus of the Pennine Way — a valley of farmsteads, moorland edges, and the Kinder Scout plateau, with a functioning railway halt and a tight community of scattered farms and one village.
About this location
Edale is a valley in the Dark Peak area of the Peak District, at the northern end of the Hope Valley. The valley contains a handful of scattered farming hamlets (booths) and a single small village around Edale Church, reached by a branch line from Manchester Sheffield (Edale station still has a regular service and a period station building). To the north, the valley is closed by the Kinder Scout plateau — England’s highest point south of the Pennines — accessed via Jacob’s Ladder or the Pennine Way, which starts at the Old Nag’s Head pub in the village.
The landscape is a specific combination of enclosed valley farmland (stone walls, sheep pasturesns) rising quickly to open moorland. In winter, the high ground carries heavy weather; in summer, the moorland paths are in continuous use by walkers. The village itself — a pub, a church, a handful of houses, Edale YHA — is a functional English upland village without tourist development.
For productions, Edale gives an upland valley environment within 20 minutes of Sheffield by train: moorland, dry-stone walls, period farmsteads, a functioning railway halt. The Peak District National Park Authority handles filming consents for land within the national park boundary.
