Summary

The surviving Victorian and Georgian backstreets of Spitalfields between Liverpool Street and Brick Lane — Elder Street, Folgate Street, and the Huguenot silk-weaver townhouses at the edge of the original settlement.

About this location

Norton Folgate and the streets immediately north of Spitalfields Market — Elder Street, Folgate Street, Wilkes Street — contain some of the most intact early-Georgian domestic streetscapes in London. Elder Street has complete Georgian terrace facades dating from the 1720s, built by the Huguenot silk weavers who settled in this area after fleeing France following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. The street has been conserved rather than converted — many of the Georgian frontages remain in original condition.

Folgate Street contains Dennis Severs’ House — a Georgian townhouse maintained as a living period installation, available for evening hire by arrangement. The wider Spitalfields area — from Liverpool Street to Brick Lane — gives a continuous transition from Victorian railway infrastructure through early Georgian domestic streets to the Bangla Town commercial strip on Brick Lane itself.

For productions, Norton Folgate and Elder Street give Georgian London domestic streetscapes of a completeness and consistency that is rare in the surviving city — the equivalent of a period street that does not require dressing to read as Georgian London.
