Summary
A post-decline Lancashire seaside resort with Art Deco architecture, Morecambe Bay’s enormous tidal flat, the Midland Hotel, and the specific atmosphere of a British resort that has not been regenerated.
About this location
Morecambe is a seaside resort on Morecambe Bay in Lancashire, which had its peak as a holiday destination in the interwar period and experienced significant decline from the 1970s onwards. The town retains substantial interwar resort architecture — the Art Deco Midland Hotel (1933, recently restored by English Heritage) being the centrepiece, plus a number of 1930s seafront hotels and amusement venues in various states of preservation.
Morecambe Bay itself is one of the largest tidal estuaries in England — the bay can extend 10 miles to the water’s edge at low tide, exposing an enormous flat of sand and mud. The views from the promenade encompass the Lake District Fells across the bay on clear days. The town’s Eric Morecambe statue on the promenade has become the most-photographed item in the resort.
For productions, Morecambe gives a seaside resort environment that reads as pre-regeneration Britain — the pleasures of the 1950s-70s seaside without the investment that has transformed comparable resorts. The Midland Hotel exterior and interior give a complete Art Deco hotel environment. Lancaster City Council handles permits.
