About this location
Montacute House stands in the village of Montacute near Yeovil in Somerset. It was built around 1598 for Sir Edward Phelips, a lawyer who later became Speaker of the House of Commons and chief prosecutor of the Gunpowder Plotters. The design is attributed to the mason William Arnold, who also worked at Cranborne Manor and Wadham College, Oxford. The house is built in the English Renaissance manner from local Ham Hill stone, the warm golden-orange material also used for the Somerset churches of the area.
The east front — the original principal entrance — has Dutch gables decorated with carved stone monkeys and other animals. The principal rooms include the Great Chamber and, on the top floor, the Long Gallery, at 172 feet the longest in England. The Long Gallery now serves as an outpost of the National Portrait Gallery, displaying Tudor and Jacobean portraits from the collection. The house passed from the Phelips family in 1931 and was given to the National Trust through the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings; it was one of the Trust’s first great houses.
Sense and Sensibility (1995, director Ang Lee, starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet) filmed several scenes at Montacute, using the house for exterior and interior sequences. The Libertine (2004, starring Johnny Depp as the Earl of Rochester) also filmed here. Montacute served as Baskerville Hall in a 2000 Canadian television adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles. Wolf Hall (BBC, 2014, written by Peter Straughan from Hilary Mantel’s novels, starring Mark Rylance) used Montacute during its filming across Somerset between May and June 2014.
