Summary

A working Edwardian transporter bridge over the River Tees — 50 metres high, still carrying vehicles, and one of the most distinctively industrial skyline features in the North East.

About this location

Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge is a working transporter bridge over the River Tees, built in 1911. It is the largest working transporter bridge in the world at 59 metres high, with a gondola that carries vehicles and pedestrians 48 metres across the river in approximately 90 seconds. The structure is painted blue and is a defining element of the Middlesbrough skyline, visible from considerable distances across Teesside’s predominantly flat industrial landscape.

The bridge is still operated by Middlesbrough Council as a road crossing and a tourist attraction. The gondola can be hired for private crossings; the walkway at the top of the structure (85 metres above the river surface at the highest point) is accessible for visitors. For productions, the bridge offers both an authentic working transporter crossing (extremely rare — only six operational globally) and the opportunity to use the high walkway for elevated exterior framing over the Tees and the surrounding industrial landscape.

Middlesbrough Council manages all commercial filming at the bridge. The surrounding Tees riverside provides additional industrial waterscape: the steelworks at Lackenby, the port of Teesport, and chemical plant installations give a working heavy-industrial backdrop that is specifically north-east English in character.
