Summary

A Grade I listed Tudor and Jacobean manor house in Dorset, seat of the Earl of Sandwich, voted the “Nation’s Finest Manor House” by Country Life in 2006, used as a filming location for Emma (1996), The History of Tom Jones (BBC, 1997), Far from the Madding Crowd (2015), and Rebecca (2020).

About this location

Mapperton House stands in a shallow Dorset valley approximately three miles south-east of Beaminster and about seven miles north of Bridport. The hamlet of Mapperton is listed in the Domesday Book as Malperetone, and the manor has been continuously occupied by only four successive families over nine centuries — the Bretts, Morgans, Brodrepps, and Comptons, all connected through the female line — before it was sold in 1919 and acquired in 1955 by Victor Montagu, Viscount Hinchingbrooke. The estate has remained in the Montagu family since, and as of 2025 is owned by Luke Montagu, 12th Earl of Sandwich, and his wife Julie, Countess of Sandwich.

The house combines elements from different periods. The north wing dates from the early 16th century and retains Tudor features including mullioned windows and ley-twist column details. The main block and south wing are primarily Jacobean, dating from the early 17th century. The overall composition — a courtyard arrangement of stone buildings, with a coach house and stables — sits directly beside the estate’s All Saints’ Church, which dates to the 12th century. The were laid out in the 1920s as an Italianate terraced garden and extended in the 1950s into a wild garden. In 2020 the gardens were named Historic Houses Garden of the Year. Country Life magazine voted Mapperton the “Nation’s Finest Manor House” in 2006.

Emma (1996, director Douglas McGrath, starring Gwyneth Paltrow as Emma Woodhouse) used Mapperton as Randalls, the home of the Westons; the house’s Jacobean south front and formal gardens stand in for the rural Regency estate. The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling (BBC, 1997, directed by Metin Hüseyin, starring Max Beesley as Tom Jones) filmed at Mapperton. Far from the Madding Crowd (2015, director Thomas Vinterberg, starring Carey Mulligan as Bathsheba Everdene) used the estate for its Dorset-period settings. Rebecca (2020, director Ben Wheatley, starring Lily James and Armie Hammer, adaptation of the Daphne du Maurier novel) used Mapperton’s terraced gardens as part of “Manderley”, the great house at the centre of the story.
