Summary
Manchester’s defining civic hall — the 1856 Venetian Gothic hall on Peter Street, the site of the Peterloo Massacre, now the Radisson Hotel with the original facade and main hall available as an event and film venue.
About this location
The Free Trade Hall on Peter Street was built in 1856 by Edward Walters in the Venetian Gothic style — a seven-bay piano nobile facade with Corinthian pilasters, now the front of the Radisson Hotel Manchester. The building is on the site of St Peter’s Field, where the Peterloo Massacre of 1819 killed 18 people. The hall was the home of the Hallé Orchestra from 1858 and remained a significant concert venue until the Bridgewater Hall opened in 1996.
The main hall interior (now used by the hotel as the Great Hall) retains its original Victorian proportions and decorative plasterwork. The facade is Grade II* listed. The Sex Pistols’ significant Manchester concerts (June 1976) took place here; the building has a specific importance in the history of punk and post-punk music in the north.
For productions, the Free Trade Hall gives a Victorian public hall interior in a central Manchester context — with the specific weight of its Peterloo and political history. The Radisson Hotel manages film hire for the main hall and facade.
