About this location
Lincoln’s lower town sits at the foot of the hill below the cathedral and medieval Bail, between the River Witham and the Broadgate. The High Street is the principal commercial artery — a wide Victorian shopping street with the river crossing at its southern end. At the river, the 12th-century High Bridge carries the street over the Witham, with medieval houses built on the bridge itself — the Glory Hole is the arched opening through which the river passes, one of the few inhabited medieval bridges remaining in England.
The High Street environment — Victorian facades, some Edwardian department store scale, the river crossing — gives a different Lincoln from the cathedral quarter above. To the south, the flat agricultural land of the Lincolnshire Fens begins, with the cathedral visible on its hilltop from miles of approach. The city’s industries (engineering, agricultural machinery) concentrated in the lower town, giving industrial Victorian context on the eastern edge.
For productions, Lincoln High Street and the Glory Hole give a specific English market town and river-crossing environment. The inhabited medieval bridge is one of only a handful remaining in England. City of Lincoln Council handles filming permits.
