Summary
A North York Moors village with a 12th-century Norman crypt beneath its church — stone cottages, a working pub, and an isolated valley setting on the edge of the moors.
About this location
Lastingham is a small village in the North York Moors, in the valley of Lastingham Beck on the edge of the open moor. The village consists of a compact cluster of stone farm buildings and cottages around St Mary’s Church, which contains one of the most remarkable Norman crypts in England — built c.1078, the crypt has survived largely unaltered and has its own separate apse and chancel below ground level. The Blacksmith’s Arms (a working village pub) and a few dozen houses complete the settlement.
The village was used as a filming location for Heartbeat (the long-running ITV drama series set in North Yorkshire), which used various North York Moors villages for its fictional Aidensfield. The combination of the Norman church, the isolated valley setting, and the working village pub gives a complete English village environment within an easily framed geography. The absence of modern development pressure means the visual character is genuinely period.
North Yorkshire Council handles street filming permits. The church crypt is open for visits and film hire is available by arrangement with the churchwardens. The Blacksmith’s Arms is a working pub that may be available for out-of-hours hire. The surrounding moor is accessible via public rights of way; landowners on the moor itself should be approached separately through the local farming community.
