Summary
A working Crown Court and prison (until 2011) in a Norman and medieval castle above the River Lune — the Shire Hall, the Pendle Witches courtroom, Georgian prison cells, and a complete castle enclosure managed as a heritage venue.
About this location
Lancaster Castle has been in continuous use as a courthouse and prison from the 12th century until 2011, making it one of the longest-used judicial buildings in England. The castle is Norman in origin (the 11th-century keep is the oldest standing structure) with substantial medieval and Georgian additions. The Shire Hall (1798) is a neo-Gothic courtroom with the original dock, judges’ bench, and jury box in situ.
The castle held the Pendle Witches trial in 1612; the courtroom used for the trial has been preserved. The Georgian cell block (the Drop Room, where prisoners were prepared for execution) and the Crown Court (still in Crown ownership) give a complete judicial history from medieval to 20th century. The castle now offers guided tours and has a professional film hire programme.
For productions, Lancaster Castle gives court, prison, and medieval castle environments within a single managed estate — a rare combination. The Shire Hall courtroom is a complete period courtroom, period-accurate for any date from 1798 onwards. Hire through Lancaster Castle’s management.
