Summary

A 5-mile preserved railway through the Brontë country of the West Yorkshire Pennines — Haworth station, Oxenhope, and the valley that served as the location for The Railway Children (1970).

About this location

The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway runs 5 miles from Keighley on the Airedale main line through Ingrow West, Damems, Oakworth, Haworth, and Oxenhope in the upper Worth Valley. The line was opened in 1867 by the Great Northern Railway and preserved from 1968 by volunteers. The most famous individual station is Oakworth — a preserved GNR station with no modern alterations, used as Edwardian filming location for The Railway Children and subsequently in numerous period productions.

Haworth station serves the village of Haworth — the Brontë Parsonage Museum is a 10-minute walk up the hill — and the station building is of the same period GNR character as Oakworth. Oxenhope at the head of the valley has a large engine shed where locomotives and rolling stock are maintained and displayed.

The valley through which the line runs is West Yorkshire mill-valley: stone-built terraces, mills, and the open moorland of the Pennines above. The combination of Brontë country landscape, Victorian railway infrastructure, and the documented association with The Railway Children makes the line one of the most requested heritage railways in England for period drama productions.
