Summary

The finest railway station in England — a neoclassical 1850 station building by J.P. Pritchett facing St George’s Square, with a six-column Corinthian portico, wings, and the full station ceremonial character intact.

About this location

Huddersfield railway station was opened in 1850 and designed by J.P. Pritchett with a monumental neoclassical facade — a six-column Corinthian portico flanked by two wings, facing St George’s Square. John Betjeman described it as “the most splendid station facade in England.” The building is Grade I listed.

The station facade faces St George’s Square — a Victorian civic square with the George Hotel (where the Rugby League was founded in 1895) and other Victorian commercial buildings. The station interior has a train shed behind the classical facade. The square itself gives a complete Victorian civic environment — classical railway station, period hotel, Victorian commercial buildings around a flagged square.

For productions, Huddersfield station and St George’s Square give a Victorian civic railway environment of exceptional quality. The portico, the square, and the George Hotel together create a complete set piece. Network Rail manages the station; Kirklees Council handles public street permits.
