About this location

Gosford House stands about two miles north-east of Longniddry in East Lothian, Scotland, on the A198 Aberlady Road in 5,000 acres of parkland and coastline. It is the family seat of the Charteris family, the Earls of Wemyss and March. The original house was built for the 7th Earl of Wemyss between 1790 and 1800 to plans by Robert Adam, who died before the house was completed. The property originally comprised the main block with flanking pavilions and colonnades, but damp damage — aggravated by the use of sea sand in the construction — led the 8th Earl to demolish the wings in the early 19th century. In 1891, the 10th Earl rebuilt the wings to designs by William Young, who also reorientated the entrance to the south and added an arcaded loggia. Young’s work produced the present south wing, which contains the marble hall — a three-storey space completed in 1891 with a double staircase leading to a surrounding picture gallery, elaborate fireplace, alabaster colonnades, and Palladian Venetian windows. The 7th Earl is buried in the Wemyss Mausoleum on the estate, a pyramid-style structure built in reference to his role as Grand Master Mason of the Grand Lodge of Scotland, which is Category A listed.

During the Second World War the British Army occupied the house, and a fire during this period damaged part of the central block. Subsequent dry rot caused the roof to be partly removed. Re-roofing was carried out in 1987 and restoration of the central block is ongoing.

The House of Mirth (2000, directed by Terence Davies, starring Gillian Anderson as Lily Bart and Dan Aykroyd, adapted from Edith Wharton’s novel) filmed at Gosford House. The Awakening (2011, directed by Nick Murphy, starring Rebecca Hall and Dominic West, a ghost story set in 1921) used the house for period location sequences. Outlander (Starz, 2015 and 2016, Seasons 2 and 3, produced by Sony Pictures Television, based on Diana Gabaldon’s novels) filmed at Gosford House for sequences representing both Scottish and European settings.
