Summary

Victorian inland docks on the Gloucester-Sharpness Canal — the largest inland dock complex in England, with a full circuit of Victorian grain warehouses converted to mixed use but retaining their exterior dock character.

About this location

Gloucester Docks is the northern terminus of the Gloucester-Sharpness Canal, which connected the city to the Severn estuary and bypassed the tidal shallows of the lower Severn. The docks were completed in 1827 and expanded through the Victorian period into the largest inland dock complex in England. The water area is surrounded by a complete circuit of Victorian warehousing — the Llanthony Warehouse, the High Orchard warehouse range, and the Mariners’ Chapel — most of which has been converted to apartments, a museum, and restaurants while retaining the exterior dock brick character.

The Waterways Museum occupies the Llanthony Warehouse and contains a significant collection of canal boats. The dock water is maintained and used by leisure craft and heritage vessels. The National Waterways Museum manages the museum buildings and can advise on film access.

For productions, Gloucester Docks gives a complete inland dock environment — warehouse-enclosed water, dock cranes (some surviving), lock gates at the entrance, and Victorian brick in good condition. The location has been used for period productions as an effective substitute for Bristol or London docklands at lower cost and without the scheduling complexity of busier urban docks.
