Summary

The UK’s largest fish dock — a Victorian-scale trawler port with processing sheds, ice houses, pontoons, fish market, and the remnant infrastructure of a 20th-century deep-sea trawling industry.

About this location

Grimsby’s Royal Dock and Fish Dock complex is the largest fish dock in the UK by area, built in the mid-19th century to serve the deep-sea trawler fleet that operated from here through to the 1970s Cod Wars. The dock has two main water areas — the Royal Dock and the Fish Dock — with pontoons, fish processing sheds, cold store buildings, and the decommissioned fish market infrastructure.

The visual character is large-scale Victorian industrial port: brick warehouses, concrete cold stores, steel processing sheds, dock walls, lock gates, and the residual trawler infrastructure. The fish processing industry continues at reduced scale; the dock handles some commercial vessels. The National Fishing Heritage Centre occupies a corner of the site.

For productions, Grimsby fish dock gives a working industrial port environment at a scale rarely available in the UK — the Victorian and mid-century port infrastructure is largely intact and available against a backdrop of North Sea light and flat Lincolnshire horizon. North East Lincolnshire Council and Associated British Ports (who operate the dock) share permit responsibilities.
