About this location
Eilean Donan is a small tidal island in the western Highlands, connected to the mainland by a footbridge, at the meeting of Loch Duich, Loch Long, and Loch Alsh, near the village of Dornie in Ross-shire. The original castle was built in the 13th century as a stronghold of the Mackenzie and MacRae clans. Royal Naval warships destroyed it in 1719 following the Mackenzies’ involvement in the Jacobite rebellion. The present structure is a 20th-century reconstruction carried out by Lieutenant-Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap between 1912 and 1932, based on partial surveys of the ruins. The castle sits within the Kintail National Scenic Area.
The castle is one of the most photographed structures in Scotland. Film appearances began with Bonnie Prince Charlie (1948) and The Master of Ballantrae (1953). The most significant screen use is Highlander (1986), in which Eilean Donan served as the ancestral home of Clan MacLeod — the Scottish sequences of the film were shot here extensively. In 1999, it doubled as MI6’s Scottish headquarters in the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough. Other credits include The New Avengers TV series (1976), the short film Black Angel (1980) — shown with The Empire Strikes Back in UK cinemas — Mio in the Land of Faraway (1987), the Bollywood film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007, standing in for Fotheringhay Castle), and the romantic comedy Made of Honor (2008). The castle has a dedicated filming and photo-shoot operation.
