Summary

A Category A listed castle and Baroque formal garden near Crieff in Perthshire, Scotland, with a 15th-century tower house and a gatehouse built in 1629 to 1630, set above one of Scotland’s most celebrated formal parterres, which is laid out in the form of a saltire using the Drummond family coat of arms and anchored by a stone sundial of 1630; listed in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland; used as a filming location for Rob Roy (1995) and Outlander (Starz) as the gardens of the Palace of Versailles.

About this location

Drummond Castle stands on a prominent ridge of hard basalt rock in Perthshire, approximately two miles south of Crieff. The castle was founded by the Drummond family, who have held the estate for centuries. The original tower house or keep dates from the 15th century; the gatehouse was built in 1629 to 1630 and is better preserved than the tower, which is no longer used as a dwelling. The gatehouse originally controlled access from the ridge to the courtyard behind, which overlooks the formal gardens to the south on the rocky outcrop below.

The gardens at Drummond Castle are among the most celebrated in Scotland and are listed in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland. The great formal parterre was originally laid out in the early 17th century and was substantially developed and formalised over subsequent centuries. The parterre exhibits the Drummond family coat of arms — Scots thistles and daggers — in its planting pattern; its traversing paths create a saltire, centering on a stone sundial dated 1630, which stands at the geometric heart of the design. The gardens originally extended to twelve acres but were reduced in scale after the Second World War.

Rob Roy (United Artists/Thorn EMI, 1995, directed by Michael Caton-Jones, starring Liam Neeson as Rob Roy MacGregor, Jessica Lange as Mary MacGregor, and Tim Roth as Archibald Cunningham) used the buildings and gardens of Drummond Castle as filming locations. Outlander (Starz, 2014 onwards, produced by Sony Pictures Television, based on Diana Gabaldon’s novels) used the Drummond Castle gardens to represent the formal garden at the Palace of Versailles as it would have appeared in the reign of Louis XV, making use of the French Baroque style of the parterre layout.
