Summary
An 18th-century Robert Adam castle on the Ayrshire clifftops, best known on screen as Lord Summerisle’s castle in The Wicker Man (1973).
About this location
Culzean Castle is a late 18th-century neoclassical castle designed by Robert Adam for the Kennedy family, Earl of Cassillis, on the Ayrshire coast. It sits on a clifftop above the Firth of Clyde with views to Arran and the Mull of Kintyre. Adam’s design included a round drawing room in one of the round towers with panoramic sea views, and the famous oval staircase — one of Adam’s finest interiors, with a balustraded well rising through multiple floors. The castle became National Trust for Scotland property in 1945.
The castle’s defining screen moment is The Wicker Man (1973), in which Culzean served as Lord Summerisle’s castle — the Hebridean seat of Christopher Lee’s character. The scenes were filmed between October and November 1972. The castle also appeared in the Bollywood film Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat (2001) and in documentaries including Castles of Scotland (PBS, 1997) and BBC’s Coast.
The surrounding 260-acre country park, which includes woodland walks, a walled garden, and the clifftop path, provides additional variety for exteriors. Access for film production requires coordination with NTS. The oval staircase is frequently the most sought-after interior space; the round drawing room offers sea views that are difficult to replicate elsewhere in Scotland.
